ORDINARY WOMEN DOING EXTRA ORDINARY THINGS!
The Great Britain Premier Women’s Dragon Boat Team has seen its fair share of adventurers and I have been very lucky to paddle with all of them.
In October 2001 Debra Searle MVO MBE nee Veal, set off on an epic journey of 3,300 miles across the Atlantic with her husband Andrew in a 23’ plywood rowing boat. The journey from Tenerife to Barbados was initially supposed to take 6 weeks. However after a week at sea her husband Andrew developed an uncontrollable fear of the ocean. Debra un-phased decided she wanted to continue alone across the Atlantic in her little rowing boat, a journey which in the end took 3.5 months and saw her battling with 30’ waves, force 8 squalls, sharks and the occasional container ship!
“Debra was heralded “Britain’s latest sporting heroine…” (The Times) when the worldwide media went crazy for the story of this 5’4″ petite novice rower who carried on rowing alone when her then husband, a 6’5″ top-level club oarsman left the boat after developing an uncontrollable fear of the ocean”.
Inspired by Debra’s achievements Rachel Smith and Lin Diaby nee Griesel, crew mates to Debra and myself set their minds to also doing the same Atlantic Crossing, so on 2nd December 2007 the girls set off from La Gomera to Antigua, rowing a staggering 2,935 miles. Lin and Rachel completed their rowing challenge in 76 days at sea, winning the Women’s Pairs class despite capsizing 300 miles from the finish. The girls today still hold the Guinness World Record for the fastest British Women’s Pair to row across the Atlantic East to West on the Trade Winds route.
Having then read Rachel’s book ‘Antigua or Bust’ Rebecca Berger decided that she wanted to take on the challenge. Now living back in Canada Rebecca chose to row in the Great Pacific Race from Monterey Bay in California to Hawaii in her boat, the Honey Badger; a distance of 2,100 miles. Unfortunately after a few days into the race Rebecca’s rowing partner had a change of heart so they had to turn back. Rebecca still has her boat and plans to attempt the race again.
Now in June 2016 two other fellow teammates from the Great Britain Premier Women's Dragon Boat Team – Guin Batten and Gillian Mara will also be taking on the power of the ocean. An all female attempt to set a new record for crossing the 1896 classic New York to Scilly Isles route across the North Atlantic – 3,000 miles in 43 days. We wish them and the rest of the team the best of luck with their adventures. To follow them across visit www.rannochwomenschallenge.com.
And for me? I would love to take on the challenge, but I get dizzy going backwards!

A Welcome by the New IDBF President - Mike Thomas
Happy New Year to all IDBF Members.
2016 brings many changes for the IDBF. Firstly, there is the change of President and leadership of our Federation. Mike MacKeddie- Haslam (MKH) has led the Federation from the beginning and has done a truly amazing job of bringing the Federation from its formation through to the wonderful sport as we all know it today. Mike will continue to be our Honorary President and we will need to find ways in which he can still be involved which are mutually beneficial. His knowledge and experience should not be lost and in this transitional period we will all have to make adjustments.
Mike has already informed you that in December a contract was signed to provide us all with a Digital Platform called Dragon Sport Solutions which, hopefully, will bring much needed finance into the sport. There is considerable work to be done by us all so that the full benefits of the platform can be achieved.
It is an honour and privilege to be given the trust and responsibility to lead the IDBF as its President. I hope that I will be able to lead the sport I love, with integrity and dignity.
It is also important that we all recognise that there is much still to be achieved in a number of areas and the goals that I want to achieve are to:
1) Update the IDBF development plan with clear and achievable targets with key performance indicators: we shall be working on this at the Council meeting in Adelaide. This plan will depend on teamwork and how we can all work together in the development of our sport.
2) Improve our communication to promote the image of dragon boating and the digital platform will have a role in this together with facebook and twitter.
3) Continue to develop our Championships with increased participation from countries, and seek ways to encourage greater junior involvement.
4) Focus on the development of a sound financial basis and improved methods of accounting.
5) Continue with our bid for IOC recognition and to develop strong links with other similar Federations and seek ways to resolve the disagreement with the ICF.
6) Ensure that plans are made for effective transition and succession.
We will achieve much more if we all work together in the true spirit of teamwork and I look forward to working with you all in the coming years to continue to develop our sport and take it to even greater achievements.
Yours in sport
Mike Thomas IDBF President

A Thank You from the Retiring IDBF President
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
A very personal email from me at the end of my last term as IDBF President, to thank you for your support and friendship during the many years in which I have been the 'Helm' steering the IDBF through its formative years as the world governing body for our wonderful and unique Sport.
After 23 years on the IDBF Executive Committee & Council, first as Secretary-General, then as Executive President and finally as President I take some quiet pride in knowing that as a Founding Father of the British DB Association and other associations at National level, the European Federation at continental level and the IDBF at world level, I have been the inspiration to so many people to become involved in the practice and administration of our Sport.
I have also been responsible for creating these organisations and developing our modern sport, from the point of calling a meeting of some 20 people attending the Hong Kong International Races in 1988, to the point of having nearly 90 Countries and Territories in IDBF Membership today. Responsible too for the systems that have resulted in the many IDBF Affiliated Festivals and Licensed Boat and Paddle Makers around the world.
Having instigated, written legislation for and maintained all the organizational systems under which the IDBF has expanded over the years and operates now; and having taken us into Sportaccord, where the IDBF is the only recognised world governing body for Dragon Boating and helped create and establish the AIMS (Alliance of Independent Members of Sport), plus taking us to the brink of recognition as an International Olympic Committee Federation, and having just secured major funding and management support for the IDBF Members, I think I have done a pretty good job for the Sport as a whole and leave the IDBF as an organisation, in a very good shape for the future.
I will continue to be involved in our Sport in Europe as the EDBF President of Honour and to work on behalf of all the IDBF Members, through Dragon Sport Solutions, the newly established Management Company that is developing and will manage the IDBF Digital Platform, due to come on line by June 2016.
The Digital Platform is an exciting new web based service that with the support of us all, will provide a wide range of management systems and promotional opportunities for the Sport, at all levels and generate for Dragon Boating much needed finance.
In the coming months I will be visiting IDBF Members to explain on a 'one to one' basis, what the Platform can do for your association and advising you on how to implement the Platform for the benefit of the paddlers we all serve. I look forward to sharing the exciting times ahead with you and together taking our Sport to new levels in its development.
With best wishes for the New Year to you and your families,
Retiring IDBF President

On 14 December 2015 Mike MacKeddie-Haslam together with Alan Van Caubergh, the IDBF Treasurer, signed a contract with Baker Sport Capital (BSC) representatives, that will result in a Digital Sports Management Platform being developed for the IDBF and the IDBF Members. Mike Thomas, as Chairman of the IDBF Competition & Technical Commission and the President Elect, witnessed the signatories.
Why is the IDBF doing this, you might well ask. Well the simple answer is to raise money for the IDBF and our Members, which will be reinvested in the Sport and BSC investment can help the IDBF achieve that.
As a result of this contract, a total of USD 5 million will come into the Sport, in the short term, to provide web-sites at all levels within the Sport and to introduce, implement and manage the Platform, on behalf of the IDBF, its Members, Clubs and Affiliates.
This will be a great step forward in the development of the Sport with funding going to all levels and the IDBF Executive Committee should be congratulated for their commitment to and support for, the project.
There is now much work to be done by both Baker SC and the IDBF to develop the Platform, discuss, agree and implement the detail of the Contract and its Appendices, recruit staff to publicize, promote and introduce the Platform and its benefits to the IDBF Members, Affiliates, Manufacturers and crews around the world.
The outline implementation time table is that work has started on developing the Platform this month and Dragon Sports Solutions, the new management company, working on behalf of the IDBF Members, will be established in January 2016.
Development of the Platform will continue until March 2015 at which time DSS staff will hold 'teach in' sessions for IDBF Members and Affiliates etc in IDBF Member's Countries, with the object of the Platform 'going live' by 1 June 2016 or earlier.
How to join the Platform, get your own websites and management programmes' and support for your own federations and clubs, will be advised to you as the Platform is developed but in general terms access to the Platform and its rewards and management programmes', will be by a subscription of 1 USD, per person, per year, being registered on the Platform.
Full details of the subscription system will be advised to you early in the New Year, so that you can decide the best way of registering your own Members and those of your Clubs, on to the Platform and what level of rewards and what management systems from it, you wish to adopt for your own federation.
With the introduction of the Platform and the support from Baker SC, the future of the Sport is really looking bright and by 'signing up' to the Platform your federation and its Members can take full advantage of that future.
