20 july 2007 - With 48 club crews expected from 13 European nations, the 2007 ECCC in St. Petersburg, Russia, is fast shaping up to be a well-attended event this summer. Expect some new faces on the block as dragon boat is gaining popularity in Eastern Europe along with familiar club crews from Germany, Italy and, of course, Russia’s own excellent teams.

2007 is the "Year of China" throughout Russia so the dragon boat races are expected to receive extra attention as part of the Russian celebrations. Victor Kisselev, Russian Dragon Boat Federation President says, "We would like to invite European athletes and other citizens to visit us in the Pearl of European and Russian culture." With more than 200 museums and 100 theaters and concert halls, St. Petersburg should provide visitors with plenty to experience both on and off the water.

Crews from Moldova, Estonia and Belorussia are expected to make their premier on the European scene at the St. Petersburg event. After a period of inactivity on the European db scene, clubs are also expected from Norway and Finland. Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine have all entered several clubs each in the competition. The club, Masters International, will give some English cheer to the scene while Hungary’s top club, Raba Dragons, will also be racing.
